the German army evacuated the city of Roermond, Netherlands, in the closing months of WWII,
they left behind thousands of primed booby traps in the homes and streets of the city.
One of the many victims of these devices, a boy named Jo Corbey, lost an eye and reportedly died a few short years later as a direct consequence of the injuries he incurred.
Photographer Werner Bischof, while travelling through war-ravaged Europe to capture the aftermath of destruction,
met the boy and took this haunting portrait, which was later published on the cover of a Swiss magazine.
